VOTD: Pogo Presents “Skynet Symphonic”

“Skynet Symphonic” by Pogo

Aussie musical seamster Pogo is a master of his craft – he takes sound bites from films (up until now, they’ve been Disney classics), stitches them together, and sets them against hot-as-fire sine wave bass tracks in a trip-hop blend equal parts funky, nostalgic, and goosebump-inducing. He recently returned from a temporary hiatus with Upular, based on Pixar’s latest film Up. Today, he’s released yet another track — “Skynet Symphonic” — which takes clips from James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Not only is this guy insanely talented, he also has a very unique insight with regard to the fluid nature of creativity and the potential of open source collaboration. When his video Bangarang (based on Steven Spielberg’s Hook) was removed from YouTube due to copyright violation, he issued the following statement:

My work serves as free viral marketing to the organisations that own the films I sample from. It’s high time the music industry pulls its head out of its ass, and realises that today’s remix culture is an asset, not a liability. To shoot down the potential here would be utterly illogical.

And these are more than just words – Pogo certainly practices what he preaches. All of his music is available for free download on Last.fm. Check out the rest of his discography here and listen to some of his original tracks (especially SplurgenShitter — that shit is tight).

Introducing: 1/sec.fm

Apologies, apologies. “Back on WP”, I said… but reality says otherwise: with exams and China Cup Forensics on the horizon, there’s been little time to update this thingamajig. Here’s a quick post, just so you know that I’m still alive – I’m introducing a new regular feature to the blog, and it’s called 1/sec.fm (shamelessly ripped off from design blog Kitsune Noir). Each week, I’ll share my weekly Last.fm charts here and recommend some music. I encourage all of you to check out some of these artists/albums, as well as comment with some suggestions of your own.

For the last week, the top spot goes to Eau Claire Memorial Jazz I, feat. its most famous alum – Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame – on vocals. On their live album A Decade With Duke, the high school band takes on old jazz hits as well as a couple of Bon Iver’s own songs. Swedish indie band jj comes in a close second with their first full length album jj n° 2, released back in July 2009. Next is Japanese multi-instrumentalist post-rock prodigy World’s End Girlfriend, whose original soundtrack for the film Air Doll (空気人形) is simply breathtaking. The rest of the list is rounded out by good ol’ Phoenix as well as artists from Nujabes latest mixtape Mellow Beats, Friends & Lovers.

What have you been listening to in the last week? Do you have any of your own music suggestions for me? Comment up!

Back in HK, Back on WP

Yesterday, I returned from a four-day exile journey to 汕頭 (Shantou) in Guangdong province, where apparently my relatives on mother’s side are local tycoons that own and run pretty much everything in the city. No, not really. Would certainly have made the trip a hell lot more interesting. This ended up being one of the more miserable travel experiences of my seventeen years of existence. And that means a lot, coming from me – I’ve certainly had my share.

From the beginning, even the purpose of our visit was a bit sketchy. My mom said we were “visiting” our grandpa — who, turns out, normally lives with us in Hong Kong…? Uh, okay. Not that I had a say in the matter anyway. Initially, I welcomed the trip as an opportunity to really get some studying done (APUSH, to be exact). Then, on the morning we were set to leave, I came down with the stomach flu.

Long bus rides in China are pretty bad already, if you’re familiar — imagine bumping around for hours with little food, having nothing to do but (a) watch sketchy mainlander commercials on TV, or (b) look at vast stretches of nondescript fields/streets out the window. Did I mention that the bathrooms are notoriously dirty? Personally, I’ve never had the guts (or sheer necessity) to use one, so I can’t speak from experience.

Anyway, completely nauseated and having already vomited once in the morning, I had to endure a 5-hour long bus ride. I figured the best way to get by was to sleep, but waaaaay easier said than done. Thanks to my overpowering nausea, the bumpy roads, and some other passenger’s incessantly beeping device, I could only sleep ten or twenty minutes at a time. Awesome! By the end, I’d vomited a couple of times (in a plastic bag) and was feeling worse for wear.

Laundry list of what I had to endure the next few days:

  • More stomach flu tomfoolery (sketchy mainland medicines aplenty!)
  • Going out for almost every meal (except one day where I slept at home)
  • Meeting random relatives and struggling to remember their specific titles
  • Oh yeah, no internet

When I did finally get better on the last day, I spent it studying, though little info was actually retained due to my persisting headache. I also burned through a host of random iPhone games I’d downloaded. (Started Earthbound again; it’s actually really freaking trippy.) All in all, a pretty unproductive few days, both in terms of work and play. I’m just glad that it’s all over and done with, now that I’m back in Hong Kong.

In retrospect, perhaps it was better that my sickness coincided with the trip, rather than coming afterward. Rather have the shitstorm all at once, yeah? Anyway, I’m back and ready, able to hang and chill. With that said, this post also marks the end to a very much unofficial and unannounced holiday hiatus from blogging. Remember back in the day when I promised a post a day? Those were the days. But in the words of a certain Kirk (taken horribly out of context — sorry, Emily!): “Rather than lament the past, let’s look to the future.”

In short, it’s good to be back.

VOTD: New Haruhi Trailer

“涼宮ハルヒの消失” (via Sankaku Complex)

Never before have I been so excited for an anime/manga-related film — not Evangelion, not 20th Century Boys. They have nothing on Haruhi. Or Yuki, rather. After the disappointment that was Season 2 and its Endless Eight, I thought I had lost all faith in animation studio KyoAni. But with the announcement that the Vanishment arc was to be immortalized in the form of a full-length feature film, all those sentiments evaporated, replaced only by beaming otaku anticipation. The latest teaser trailer only further whets my excitement: in just thirty seconds, a contemplative albeit slightly depressing montage of a displaced Kyon soon explodes into a crescendo of OMGWTF scenes. Minds are fucked, bricks are shat, pants are jizzed. And the segment comes with a release date — 涼宮ハルヒの消失 will hit theaters in Japan on February 6. I can’t wait.

For those of you who don’t know who or what Haruhi is, read this. Now.

VOTD: “One Life Stand” by Hot Chip

“One Life Stand” by Hot Chip

Not too long ago I posted about Hot Chip’s exciting music offerings in 2010, and it looks like the British electropoppers have wasted no time in releasing a music video for One Life Stand, the title track of their fourth studio album. Visually, the video is really quite clever in its cinematography and it perfectly captures the playful spirit of the song and of the band as a whole. In fact, many parts of the clip don’t look choreographed; rather, it seems like director Roel Wouters simply put the band in a room and had them spontaneously do random things. End result? A quirky video that not only screws around with your depth perception but is a pleasure to watch.

Pimp My Desktop

Yesterday, rather than do something productive with my life, like study for APUSH, the irrepressible urge to rearrange and redesign my computer layout suddenly dawned upon me. I am now proud to say that it is truly, as we say, the sex (click image for full-size). Clean desktop free from clutter, Dock icons arranged by color, and a kickass wallpaper to round the whole thing out (it also happens to say “COLOR”). Yeah, no life, I know. Despite my utter lack of organization in the “real world”, I do at least want my digital world to look nice albeit aesthetically pleasing. It’s funny; I find that I OCD over the most trivial of things — anything from consistent typography and spacing in essays and reports to aurally displeasing word choice in emails.

Anyhow, for the time being, simply feast your eyes on my pimped-out desktop. Send me pictures of your own efforts at s2tephen@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can check out Kitsune Noir for its long-standing Desktop Wallpaper Project, a collection of wallpapers from the hottest new designers, diverse in style but constant in their beauty. My last few wallpapers are all from the project — while many of the artists’ styles may not suit your tastes, you’re sure to find something in the archives. These wallpapers are available in a number of sizes, even PSP and iPhone formats. On the other hand, my current “COLOR” wallpaper is part of Alex Beltechi’s amazing poster series Draw, which masterfully combines typography with organic explosions and striking colors.

Check out the rest of the Draw gallery here.

Typo/graphic Posters

(via idsgn)

My life is officially complete — Typo/graphic Posters, brainchild of Brazilian designer Andre Felipe, has just been relaunched and it is certainly legit. Bringing together graphic designers from around the world, the site is basically a gallery of some of the hottest typography-based posters of today. To no surprise, Helvetica is pretty much everywhere, but the site’s true strength lies in its versatility. Font and type are used in ways you would never expect; the diversity of different creative styles and ideas is simply stunning. According to the site:

Typo/graphic posters is a directory of typographic and graphic posters, a passionate project focused on the graphic design community. Our goal is to be a timeless source for studies, inspiration and promotion of good design through poster culture and cultivation of typography and pure forms of design.
We believe that quality is generated by consuming quality.

I could surf this site forever, no joke. Everything is just so fresh and clever, thought-provoking and innovative. Amazing. If you love fonts, graphic design, or pretty things in general, you must visit Typo/graphic Posters immediately!

VOTD: “Night By Night” by Chromeo

“Night By Night” by Chromeo (via Stereogum)

I posted a couple of remixes for this song a while back, but I still can’t seem to get enough of it: Night By Night is Chromeo’s first original song since 2007, and it’s now been immortalized in the form of a music video. Watch as Dave 1 seduces and dances with women of various ethnicities in a dark, sketchy warehouse! The whole thing is rather Dirty Dancing-esque, slightly creepy, but still kinda cool nonetheless. I cannot wait to see what their third studio album will be like… if Night By Night is any indication, it’ll be good times.

Random Wikipedia Fact of the Day: Did you know that Dave is currently finishing his Ph.D. in French Literature at Columbia? WTF, srsly, in a good way.

Jónsi: Going Solo (and English!)

Back in July, Jónsi Birgisson (of Sigur Rós fame) teamed up with boyfriend Alex Somers to form the experimental ambient duo Jónsi & Alex, their debut album Riceboy Sleeps hauntingly ethereal, beautiful. Now he has been tearing up the blogosphere with his latest track, Boy Lilikoi, the first offering from his upcoming solo album Go, which is slated for release next March.

The LP marries the shiver-inducing vocals of Jónsi with majestic string arrangements from contemporary classical composer Nico Muhly in a blend that is equal parts exhilarating and cathartic. What’s more, Jónsi will not be singing in the gibberish Hopelandic dialect so characteristic of Sigur Rós. Instead, Go will primarily be sung in English — how’s that for a dream come true?

Worst Trailer Ever: The 40 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It

“The 40 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It” Movie Trailer (NSFW, via /Film)

I think I just vomited in my mouth, a little bit. In the vein of such terrible parody extravaganzas as Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, and Disaster Movie, the film shown here is a frightening, shameless mishmash of the films of Judd Apatow: namely, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Superbad. It appears director Craig Moss even hired lookalikes of all the actors of said films, but that doesn’t make this movie look any better. Watch the trailer and gape in awe at the sheer level of fail. According to IMDb, The 40 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It comes out next year. Thankfully (and fittingly), this will be released direct-to-DVD and soon relegated to the bargain bin in most stores, I suspect.
